I grew up on a small farm in New Zealand, surrounded by animals. I loved them all, but my sanctuary was always with my equine friendsāincluding Bango (pictured). Although, when he was grumpy, he had a habit of biting!
Whenever I felt stressed, I would go to the paddock and lie on my horses while they grazed. It instantly shifted my mood and gave me a deep sense of connection. Science now confirms what I felt back thenāhorses have an incredible ability to calm and heal us, both mentally and physically.
š¹ Heart-to-Heart Connection ā¤ļø
Ā Research shows that our heart rates synchronise with the more stable heart rate of horses, creating a calming effect. A study by the HeartMath Institute found that horses emit a strong electromagnetic field from their hearts, influencing human physiology and promoting relaxation. Known as "cardiac coherence," this phenomenon helps us reduce stress and anxiety (McCraty & Atkinson, 2012).
š¹ Equine-Assisted Therapy and Mental Health š§
Ā Equine therapy has been used for trauma recovery, anxiety, PTSD, and emotional regulation. A study published in the Journal of Traumatic Stress found that veterans with PTSD showed significant symptom reduction after participating in equine-assisted therapy (Johnson et al., 2018). The rhythmic motion of horseback riding stimulates the nervous system in ways similar to deep pressure therapy, promoting emotional stability.
š¹ Building Connection and Emotional Awareness š¤
Ā Horses are highly attuned to human emotions, mirroring our feelings and encouraging self-awareness. They respond to body language and energy, making them powerful partners in developing emotional intelligence, confidence, and trust.
š¹ Physical and Neurological Benefits š
Ā Riding improves balance, coordination, and core strength, but the benefits go deeper. The Journal of Neuroengineering and Rehabilitation found that horseback riding enhances cognitive function and motor skills, particularly in individuals with neurological conditions like cerebral palsy (Stergiou et al., 2017).
Horses offer us more than just companionshipāthey provide a unique and powerful form of healing. Whether through riding or simply being in their presence, they balance and soothe us.
Have you ever experienced the therapeutic power of horses? Iād love to hear your stories! š“āØ
